Medium Workshops
LEVEL 1: Beginner Oil Painting Workshop
The beginner class is for the absolute novice, who knows nothing,
zip! about painting. Or you haven’t painted in years and what
to get started again. The class includes: basics about color, composition,
and technique. After doing a few painting exercises, each student
will paint a painting to take home. I will paint along with the
class so the student can watch how I paint each step before they
do. All material and supplies are included in beginning classes,
but a supply and materials list will be given out for those who
wish to continue beyond this level.
LEVEL 2 Beginner Oil Painting Workshop
In this dynamic workshop we will do a few ‘warm up’
exercises to refresh our handling of paint. Then you will do a painting
in which you will be exposed to a new level of color and technique.
Watercolor
Beginner
There is no painting medium that has as much elegance and refinement
as watercolors. In this workshop you will learn how to ‘harness
the power of the water’, and you will be given all the basic
information you need to begin enjoying watercolor painting.
Watercolor
Intermediate- Advanced
You have the basics down, now we will focus on ‘Dramatic Light’,
‘Light and Reflections’ (like wet streets and sidewalks),
and ‘Painting Transparency’ (like bottles, jars, and
other clear materials. Note: These are three separate workshops.
_____________________________________________
Genre Workshops
Dramatic Light (1 & 2)
Intermediate - Advanced
Make your paintings glisten with brilliant light.
Painting Transparency (1 & 2)
Intermediate - Advanced
This is Crash Course # 2 in painting transparent jars, bottles,
and other cool glass stuff.
Reflections (1 & 2)
Intermediate – Advanced
Reflections give your paintings greater depth and dimension. Rainy
streets, sidewalks, lake water reflections, and more.
Landscape in Oil
Intermediate - Advanced
In studio, and plein air. Fill your paintings with the subtle, or
dramatic, qualities found in nature. Capture light and atmosphere
with your brush. Why is landscape painting the most popular painting
genre? Because it reconnects us to our world and environment. This
painting workshop honors our relationship with the land.
Still Life Painting
Intermediate – Advanced
If you want to learn a lot about painting in a short time, jump
into still life painting. We will explore simple to complex still
life arrangements, how to select and juxtapose objects, and how
to modify lighting condition to produce desired effects.
Scenics
Intermediate – Advanced
City streets, dapple light falling on brick, an old car down by
the railroad tracks. These words describe scenes that are interesting
to paint. This workshop explores the vignettes, and ‘visual
stories’ found in our urban and rural environments.

Foundation Workshops
Basic Drawing
Beginner
Drawing is a fundamental skill that will help you move easily into
any other type or artistic expression. You will learn how to ‘see’
with an artist perceptive eye, how to do quick sketches and slower
developed drawings, and basic perspective.
Oil Techniques and Materials
Intermediate – Advanced
Learn several oil painting techniques including palette knife, wet
in wet oil, wet on dry oil, glazing, painting in layers, etc. Discover
interesting materials, like molding paste, gel extenders, and pumice
paste that can be added to you paintings to make them do strange
and wonderful things.
COLOR 1
Intermediate - Advanced
Color is the ‘emotion’ of a painting. Learn how to express
powerful, daring, or subtle emotions in your painting. We will explore
Hue, Value, and Chroma, Complementary Colors, and more.
COLOR 2
Intermediate - Advanced
Learn a greater range of color possibilities to have at your finger
tips. We will go deeper into color theory.
Composition 1
Intermediate – Advanced
We will explore the foundational structure of painting, learn to
give your paintings balance, order, and harmony. (Meet the big Three:
Object, Atmosphere, and Picture Plane composition).
Composition 2
Intermediate – Advanced
This will really ‘amp up’ you composition. We will explore
the foundational structure of painting. You will gain greater awareness
of ‘designing’ your paintings.
Finding your Artistic ‘Voice’
Intermediate – Advanced
This workshop takes you on an inward journey to discover your unique
expression. It’s more than a matter of being ‘different’
than others, it’s also about being more fully aware of your
creative potential. Your vision, your ideas, your stories, your
passion— these are what the world waits to see in your art.
Joseph Campbell coined the phrase “Follow your bliss’,
in this workshop we will unlock the meaning of these words as it
relates to artistic expression.
