Basic Oil Painting Supplies, and Suppliers.
Art Supply Discounts
Most art supply stores will give you a discount if you tell them
you are one of my students, just show them your PayPal receipt for
purchasing the class. Art supply stores often have sales. If you
are a bargain shopper, compare store prices. Art supply stores are
listed below. Print out this page and take it with you to an art
store.
The Patrick Howe Art Supply Kit
You can receive a 20% discount on art supplies when you purchase
the Patrick Howe Art Supply Kit from Artists and Craftsmen Supply
(A & C) (See address below). The Patrick Howe Art Supply Kit
contains everything you will need for the class. Call A & C
in advance and have them assemble your kit so it will be ready for
pick up when you arrive at their store. Their Phone: 206-545-0091
Cost of Supplies
The estimated cost for supplies is about $170 and up. Or about $140
for the A&C kit.
If You Have Your Own Supplies
Here are a few important things to know: Turpentine, and Turpenoid
are not allowed in my classes, only Odorless Mineral Spirits such
as Gamsol. We work flat on tabletops, some easels are also available
at the gallery.
Supply list for Patrick Howe’s Oil Painting
Classes.
Painting Surface
We use canvas pads (Each pad contains 10 12” x 16”
canvas sheets) Do not get “canvas paper”, it
doesn’t work well.
Cardboard
We tape each loose 12” x 16” canvas sheet to a 16”
x 21” piece of corrugated cardboard for easy handling of the
wet painting. Quantity: 3 (I have mine cut at Artist & Craftsman
Supplies (see address below), or you can cut up a large box from
home.
Palette
1-12” X 16” paper palette pad.
Paints
For students new to painting I recommend the student grade Art Sketching
Oils made by Gamblin. (I use Gamblin’s professional grade
paints but they are naturally more expensive). There are other high
quality professional brands available too. Consult your art supply
store.
Minimum Beginner Palette (Size: all 37 ML tubes):
Cadmium Red Medium
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Ultramarine Blue
Cadmium Orange
Dioxazine Purple
Quinacridone Magenta
Phthalo Green

Burnt Sienna
Burnt Umber Titanium Zinc White (either three 37ml tubes, or 1 large
150 ml tube) (and any other colors that catch your fancy)
Oderless Mineral Spirits (OMS) 16oz can.
Gamsol: This is a solvent for cleaning brushes. (Turpentine, and
Turpenoid are not allowed in my classes)
Medium
If possible, please get Archival Oils Odorless lean Medium 100 ML,
made by Chroma. It has to be special ordered through Dick Blick,
of A & C. If you cannot get it then please bring a small amount
of Galkyd Lite made by Gamblin.
Brush Cleaning Jar
Note: Art supply stores do not carry inexpensive water tight brush
cleaning jars. Therefore, bring a small jar with a lid from home.
Or purchase a one-half pint, wide mouth canning jar, with lid. Contact
a hardware store, or any place that sells small canning jars. The
A&C Kit mentioned above contain a jar.
Brushes
Each brush manufacture sizes their brushes differently. For example,
a #8 brush size from one manufacturer might be 1/8” wide,
and a #8 from another manufacturer might be 3/4” wide. So
here I have indicate the size by the width of the bristles in inches,
at the tip of the brush.(Do not get the ‘super long’
bristle Filberts, get the regular size bristle)
Filbert
#8 3/4” wide Filbert, bristle (for blocking in)
#4 1/2” wide Filbert, bristle (for general strokes)
#2 1/4” wide Filbert, bristle (for general brush strokes)
Brights
#8 3/4” wide Bright, bristle (for blocking in)
#4 1/2” wide Bright, bristle (for general strokes)
#2 1/4” wide Bright, bristle (for general brush strokes)
