The Patrick Howe Oil Painting Kit Is Ideal For Learning How To Paint In Oils!
In my classes you can use your own painting supplies or purchase my Oil Painting Kit. Having taught hundreds of people oil painting over the past 30 years, I have developed this unique Kit for new and experienced student of oil painting.
(Note: I do not profit from the sale of the Patrick Howe Oil Painting Kit. I provide it as a convenience to my students).
I purchase my art supplies from Artist and Craftsman Supply, 4350 8th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105.

Explanation Of Kit Contents
Paints
In my classes you are welcome to use whatever brand of paint you wish. I have included Gamblin Artist Grade oil paints in the kit because it is a high-quality paint but sits in the middle of the price range for oil paints. Gamblin also offers their 1980 student grade series. But I recommend moving up to the Artist Grade as soon as you feel ready because the Artist Grade has a more pigment. I also like Gamblin because they are an environmentally conscientious company. And if you have a question, call or email. They'll get back to you right away.

All paints have three components: 1. Pigment. 2. A binder such as linseed oil, and 3. calcium carbonate.
The pigment is what gives the paint its color. The linseed oil binds with the pigment and hardens to the surface you are painting on. Calcium Carbonate gives paint an added thickness. The calcium carbonate does not alter the color of the pigment.

Why Oil Paints Cost So Much
The most expense ingredient in paints is the pigment. Different pigments cost different amounts depending on their rarity and/or difficulty in processing them. That's why some colors are more expensive than others. The inexpensive brands of oil paints have more calcium carbonate and less pigment in them. Consequently the calcium carbonate thins the color and makes it more transparent. Colors with less calcium carbonate and more pigment have colors that are deeper and more opaque. This is a good reason to step up to Artist Grade paints.

Galkyd Lite
This is the basic medium we will use. Galkyd Lite will allow us to create glaze tints, oil outs, and finish glazes.
Galkyd lite is made of synthetic resin and maintains it surface flexibility after it dries. There are many other excellent mediums available too.

Gamsol
Gamsol is what we will use to clean our brushes. It can also be used to thin our paint slightly if it is too thick when squeezed out of the tube. Gamsol is the highest grade odorless mineral spirit there is, and is much safer that traditional Turpentine. Other solvent products such as Terpenoid are not truly odorless so I do not recommend them. Learn more at: Gamsol Safety. Also learn how to Recycle Gamsol.

Brushes
In the Patrick Howe Oil Painting Kit are 4 Brushes: 2 Bristle Filberts (a large and small), 2 Bristle Brights (a large and small), and 1 Liner brush. There are thousands of brushes out there, but you can rely on these as your go-to basic brushes.

Brushes Do What They Look Like
As I always say "Brushes do what they look like." The Filbert for example is round, so it performs well with amorphous round shapes, as are found in clouds and bushes. The Bright brush has square sharp edges. So it performs well when painting shapes with edges such as door frames, windows, buildings and anything with hard edges. The Liner is long and skinny so it excels at producing long skinny lines.

Canvas Pad
The canvas pad comes with 10 sheets of canvas. Typically students use stretched canvas to paint on. But painting on canvas sheet is more economical and easier to deliver to you. Not included in the kit is cardboard. You will tape a canvas sheet to a piece of cardboard, cut from a cardboard box at home, for example. The cardboard will give the painting support while you are painting on it.
Always make sure you are painting on the correct side of the canvas sheet. The correct side has been gessoed and it is brighter, and is purer white color than the back of the sheet.
Warning: Do not confuse canvas pads with canvas paper. Some manufacturers make a paper that looks like canvas but it doesn't work well. Plus the packaging often looks the same. So make sure you always select real canvas sheets.

Disposable Paper Palette
The palette is the surface you will use to mix your paints on. It comes in a pad. Once one sheet is used up, you can tear it off the pad and throw it into the trash. Paper palettes come in white and gray. I prefer the white.

Masking Tape
You will need masking tape for the projects that I will give you. Never use blue tape, green tape or any other brightly colored tape. Their bright color is distracting while you are painting. stick to boring beige color making tape. And never buy drafting tape which looks the same but is very expensive.
