Oil Painting Supplies

Picture
(Note: Order supplies early. Because of supply chain issues, some items may be difficult to find, or arrive late).

Please read to the bottom of this page.
In my classes, you can use your own painting supplies or purchase my recommended supplies here.

This is an oil class, so please no acrylics, or water-soluble oils.

Where To Buy (Prices may vary)
Any art supply store or online.
1. All the supplies are already gathered for you on Amazon. The Amazon list does not include the cardboard you will need, and paper towels. This list includes artist-grade Gamblin colors. For the economy version, substitute the same colors with Gamblin 1980 series paint.
2. Blick online. Brick and mortar - Blick Art Materials: 1600 Broadway, Seattle, WA 98122.
3. Artist and Craftsman Supply, University District. 4350 8th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105.
4. Online at: Jerry’s Artarama
Stores like Hobby Lobby or Michaels may or may not have all the supplies needed.
Print out this PDF of the supplies and take it to your preferred art supply store:

Here are the supplies you will need:
Oil Paint
(“Artist Oil” Preferred. See Economy option below).
1   Gamblin Artist Oil, 37 ml, Cadmium Red Medium
1   Gamblin Artist Oil, 37 ml, Cadmium Yellow Medium
1   Gamblin Artist Oil, 37 ml, Ultramarine Blue
1   Gamblin Artist Oil, 37 ml, Titanium Zinc White (No Zinc White substitute. Titanium White Ok)
1   Gamblin Artist Oil, 37 ml, Ivory Black

Economy Oil Paint Option
For those on a budget, instead of getting Gamblin Artist Oil Colors above, get the same colors in the Gamblin 1980 Series, which are less expensive. What is the difference between the two paints? The Artist Oils have more pigment, so the colors are more brilliant and have more color saturation. But you can learn to paint well with either.

Brushes
1  Princeton 9700 Snap Filbert # 2, Bristle Brush (No soft hair brush substitute)
1  Princeton Ashley 5200 Filbert #4 Bristle Brush (No soft hair brush substitute)
1  Princeton Select 3750 Brush Round #1

Palette
1 Strathmore Disposable Palette Pad 12” x 16” (This is a wax paper pad that you will mix your paint on. Gray Paper substitute ONLY if white is not available.)

Solvent
1  Gamsol- Odorless Mineral Spirits, 16 oz, (For cleaning your brush, and thinning paint)
1  Glass Ball Mason Jar, 8 oz.  (to contain your solvent above for cleaning brushes). The container must be watertight.

Canvas
1  Fredrix Canvas Pad, or other brands, 10 sheets, 9” x 12” (No Canvas Paper, Read product label carefully! The product must be canvas, not paper!) (Alternative brands OK, but no Blick Brand Canvas Pads. Students complain that it dries the paint too fast).

2  Pieces of cardboard cut to 12” x 15’ (To mount your loose canvas sheet on)

1  Masking Tape, 1” x 60 Yard  (For taping your loose canvas to a piece of cardboard). Get the beige color tape, not blue or green.

Miscellaneous
1  Prismacolor Art Gum Eraser (Best for erasing on canvas)
1  An inexpensive foot-long Plastic Ruler
1  Mesh Bag 20’X26’ (to carry your supplies in)
5 to 10 sheets of paper towels (for cleaning brushes)
