Blue In Shadows
(TAT 11/21/23 Blue In Shadows)
Many painters know to put blue in their shadows.
Why?
Because blue is found in shadows in nature..
What makes that happen in nature?
On a sunny day, the sunlight brightens everything it falls upon. But in shadows, you are not seeing a reflection of sunlight. In shadows, you are seeing the reflection of the blue sky. The blue is most pronounced in shadows that fall upon flat white surfaces.
Are there blue shadows on overcast days?
No. If the sky is gray, then gray will be reflected in the shadows.
Many painters put blue in shadows anyway, and in any kind of subject, like still lifes.
Below are examples. The first few images are photos, then the rest are paintings.
Your mission is to look for blue in shadows on sunny days.
