Notice: This supply list is only for my brick-and-mortal classes in Seattle. Which is temporarily on hold due to the Covid virus. Please see my Oil Painting Kit.
Oil Painting Class Supply List
You can purchase your art supplies at Artist & Craftsman Supply (4350 8th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98105) where I teach some of my classes.
You have two art supply options:
1) Purchase the Patrick Howe Full Kit (about $175)
3) You can bring you own supplies: See details below.
Cost of Supplies and Discounts
Most art supply stores will give you a discount if you tell them you are one of my students. If you are a bargain shopper, compare store prices. Art supply stores often have sales. Artist and Craftsman Supply is my preferred art supply store.
Watercolors, acrylics, and water-soluble oils are not used in my classes. Only genuine oil paints are allowed.
The Patrick Howe Painting Kit (20% OFF)
You can receive a 20% discount on art supplies when you purchase the Patrick Howe Kit from Artists and Craftsmen Supply (A & C) (See address below). The Patrick Howe Kit contains everything you will need and more for the class except for paper towels. Call A & C in advance and ask them to assemble your Patrick Howe Painting Kit so it will be ready for pick up when you arrive at their store for your first class. Their Phone: 206-545-0091.

If You Have Your Own Supplies
Here are a few important things to know: Turpentine, and Turpenoid are not allowed in my classes, only the Odorless Mineral Spirits "Gamsol". We work flat on tabletops, some easels are also available. Basically, you will need colors: red, yellow, blue, orange, green, purple, black and white.

What Comes In The Patrick Howe Painting Kit?
Tote Bag
An art bin and tote bag comes with the kit to make carrying your supplies easy.
Painting Surface
We use canvas pads (Each pad contains 10 12” x 16” canvas sheets) DO NOT get “canvas paper”, it doesn’t work well.
Cardboard
We tape each loose 12” x 16” canvas sheet to a 16” x 21” piece of corrugated cardboard for easy handling of the wet painting. Quantity: 3 (I have mine cut at Artist & Craftsman Supplies (see address below), or you can cut up a large box from home.
Palette
1-12” X 16” paper palette pad.
Paints
For the inexperienced painter I recommend the sketching grade "1980 Series" oil paints made by Gamblin. I personally use Gamblin’s "Artist Grade" paints. They are a little more expensive than the 1980 series but contain more pigment. (If you become a committed hobbyist painter, I recommend switching up to the Artist Grade). There are other high quality professional brands of paint available too. Consult your art supply store.
Minimum Beginner Colors (Size: all 37 ML tubes):
Cadmium Red Medium
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Ultramarine Blue
Cadmium Orange
Phthalo Emerald (NOT PHTHALO GREEN)
Dioxazine Purple
Ivory Black
Titanium Zinc White (either three 37ml tubes, or 1 large 150 ml tube)
Optional Colors (These colors are not essential for the class but handy for later):
Burnt Sienna
Burnt Umber
Solvent
Odorless Mineral Spirits (OMS) 16oz can.
Gamsol: This is a solvent for cleaning brushes. (Turpentine, and Turpenoid are not allowed in my classes)
Medium
Small bottle of Galkyd Lite by Gamblin.
Canning Jars
Your canning jar will contain your Gamsol. (Gamsol will be used to clean your brushes). One canning jar comes with your kit. But you will need two more at home because I am going to show you how to easily recycle your Gamsol so none is ever thrown away. You can buy the two extra canning jars at Craftsman Supply when you arrive if you do not already have some at home.
Brushes
Each brush manufacture sizes their brushes differently. For example, a #8 brush size from one manufacturer might be 1/8” wide, and a #8 from another manufacturer might be 3/4” wide. So here I have indicate the size by the width of the bristles in inches, at the tip of the brush.
Filbert
#6 3/8” wide Filbert, bristle (for general brush strokes)
#2 1/4” wide Filbert, bristle (for general brush strokes)

#2 1/4” wide Bright, bristle (for general brush strokes)
